Championship Week Preview- CAA

CAA PREVIEW

Bubble-

  • Old Dominion- More than likely will get in, but get to the Title Game
  • Northeastern- Longshot

3 Players to Watch

  1. Gerald Lee (Old Dominion)- A very skilled bigman (6’10 250).  ODU’s offense runs through him.  Made 1st Team All-Conference averaging 14.32 points and 5.06 reb a night.
  2. Charles Jenkins (Hofstra)- Hofstra is a 7th seed, but Jenkins has the talent to put the Pride on his back and make a run in the tournament.  Great in Hofstra’s up-and-down style of play.  Named CAA player of the year.  Averaged 20.4 ppg, 4.4 rpg, and 3.8 apg.
  3. Larry Sanders (Virginia Commonwealth)- Named CAA Defensive Player of the Year, and made the 1st Team All-Conference.  A fantastic shotblocker; he has good timing and he can get up there.

(Charles Jenkins)

Projected Championship Game- 1. Old Dominion (23-8) vs 7. Hofstra (18-13) (10-8)

I’m going way off the board with Hofstra, but why not?  The CAA Tournament has always been wild, exciting and unpredictable, and Hofstra is red hot.  They’ve won 6 straight and 9 of 10.  Maybe it’s just me, but I really haven’t been impressed with (2.) Northeastern or (3.) William & Mary.

Like I stated before, Jenkins is electrifying.  He reminds Hofstra fans of Speedy Claxton, a former Pride player.  Claxton had a productive NBA career.  Jenkins really can’t be keyed on because Hofstra has several scoring options.  Four players chip in over 8 points a night, Chaz Williams, Cornelius Vines, Halil Kanacevic, and Nathaniel Lester.

(Speedy Claxton)

Old Dominion was the big bear of the conference this year (23-8) regular season and (15-3) conference record. They defeated Georgetown on the road. (It seems like they do it every year)  F Gerald Lee is a dominant force inside.  F Frank Hassell is a solid complement.  He averaged 9.0 ppg and 6.45 rpg.

Prediction– Old Dominion, the cinderella will not beat the big bear.

Projected NCAA Tournament Seed– Old Dominion (11)
