Championship Week Preview- WCC

Locks- Gonzaga

Bubble- St. Mary’s- They need to get to the Title Game and have a nice outing, if they play Gonzaga.

3 Players to Watch

  1. Matt Bouldin (Gonzaga)- The leader and go-to-guy for the Zags.  A complete player; the WCC Player of the Year averaged 16.0 ppg, 4.7 rpg and 4.1 apg.
  2. Omar Samhan (St. Mary’s)- With Patrick Mills and Diamon Simpson gone, Samhan became the leader of the Gaels.  Led the WCC in scoring (21.5 ppg) and rebounding (11.1 rpg).
  3. T.J. Campbell (Portland)- Led the Pilots in scoring (13.7 ppg).  2nd in the league in assists (5.5 apg).

(Omar Samhan)

Projected Championship Game- 1. Gonzaga (25-5) (12-2) vs 2. Saint Mary’s (24-5) (11-3)

This contest is humongous for St. Mary’s if they want any chance of getting into the NCAA Tournament.  They don’t necessarily have to win this game to get into the field of 65, but they don’t trust the selection committee, they were left out of the dance as a bubble team last year.  The Gaels have struggled in the previous two meetings against Gonzaga this season, losing both contests.

St. Mary’s is a solid offensive squad.  Omar Samhan is a monster inside, cleaning up the scraps inside the paint.  Mickey McConnell and Matthew Delladova make-up a nice little backcourt.

Gonzaga has dominated the West Coast Conference for a decade now.  They’ve won the WCC Regular Season Crown ten consecutive times.  This season’s team is extremely balanced offensively.  Bouldin does it all, G Steven Gray can shoot, C Robert Sacre has been ok inside and freshman Elias Harris was the WCC’s Freshman of the Year.

(Matt Bouldin)

Prediction- Gonzaga, way too talented.  St. Mary’s will fight their hearts out, but in the end, I like the Zags to prevail.

Projected NCAA Tournament Seeds

  • Gonzaga (5)
  • Saint Mary’s (13)
