Championship Week Preview- Big Sky
BIG SKY TOURNAMENT PREVIEW
3 Players to Watch
Damian Lillard (Weber State)- Big Sky Player of the Year. He’s an all-around player, he led the league in scoring (19.7 ppg), and 4th in assists (3.8 apg). He loves to shoot the 3.
Yahosh Bonner (Northern Colorado)- A fantastic defender, named the Big Sky Defensive Player of the Year. He didn’t put up staggering statistics, but his defense could get him a job playing basketball professionally, whether it’s the NBDL or overseas.
Cameron Jones (Northern Arizona)- 2nd in the conference in scoring (19.3 ppg).
Projected Championship Game- 1. Weber State (19-9) (13-3) vs 2. Northern Colorado (24-6) (12-4)
This would be your traditional offense vs defense contest. Weber State is 2nd in the Big Sky in scoring (77.3 ppg), while Northern Colorado is 2nd in points allowed (66.6 ppg).
Weber State has won 10 of their last 12 games. Offensively, the Wildcats have plenty of depth and versatility, six guys dump in 7+ points per game. G Damian Lillard is a playmaker. C Steve Panos can score inside, and F Franklin Session is a slasher.
Northern Colorado gets it done defensively. Yahosh Bonner can really defend. Their scoring comes mostly from their backcourt. Will Figures loves to get to the basket and draw fouls. He’s a good free-throw shooter too (85.3%). Devon Beitzel can really shoot it, 44% from behind the arc.
Prediction- Weber State, the Big Sky is another conference who plays their tournament games at the highest seed’s home floor. Bonner may limit Lillard’s scoring, but the Wildcats have other scorers. I like Weber State at home.
Projected NCAA Tournament Seed– Weber State (15)
