Championship Week Preview- Sun Belt
SUN BELT TOURNAMENT PREVIEW
3 Players to Watch
Tyren Johnson (Louisian-Lafayette)- Sun Belt Player of the Year. Averaged 18.0 ppg and 8.0 rpg during the regular season.
A.J. Slaughter (Western Kentucky)- One of the leftovers from the Hilltopper teams who has made the NCAA Tournament the last 2 seasons. A good little guard, 17.5 ppg, and 4.3 apg.
George Odufuwa (North Texas)- Averaged a double-double during the season; 11.5 ppg and 10.5 rpg.
Projected Championship Game- 2. North Texas (23-8) (13-5) vs 4. Western Kentucky (21-13) (12-6)
Western Kentucky has gotten to the 2nd round of the NCAA Tournament the past 2 seasons. This season their road to the tournament was a little tougher. They lost their coach Darrin Horn during the offseason to South Carolina, and many of their stars during the last two seasons are gone (Courtney Lee and Orlando Mendez-Valdez).
With all that being said, the Hilltoppers still have talent. A.J. Slaughter is the leader.
North Texas has won 8 games in a row. The Mean Green play an up-tempo style and they can really get to the tin. Tristan Thompson and Josh White are a good backcourt. George Odufuwa is a manchild in the paint.
Prediction- North Texas, I like the up-tempo style the Mean Green play. Western Kentucky’s impressive 2 year NCAA Tournament stretch will come to an end.
