3 Players to Watch

  1. Jordon Crawford (Xavier)- The transfer from Indiana has been stupendous thus far at Xavier.  He’s the same guy who caused a stir during the summer when he threw one down over LeBron James at the LeBron James Skills Academy.
  2. Kevin Anderson (Richmond)- He and David Gonzalvez form arguably the best backcourt in the league.  He’s strong, quick and can get to the tin.  He averaged 17.8 ppg during the season.
  3. Lavoy Allen (Temple)- A double-double machine.  Not that anyone cares, but, it’s pretty cool that he attended 2 of my alma maters, Pennsbury High School and Temple.

(Jordan Crawford)

Projected Championship Game- 1. Temple (26-5) (14-2) vs 3. Richmond (24-7) (13-3)

Temple was expected to have a down year after the graduation of Dionte Christmas.  Instead, the Owls soared en route to 26 regular season wins.  The Owls are a tremendous defensive team, reminiscent of old times when the great John Chaney used to stroll the sidelines.  They are 1st in the Atlantic 10 in both points allowed (56.8 ppg) and field goal percentage defense (38.1%).

Temple doesn’t exactly have a star, but for the Owls, it’s better that way.  They are fantastic at passing the basketball, whether it’s hitting the open cutter, kicking out to the perimeter or being unselfish in transition.  Temple essentially plays with two point guards in the backcourt in Juan Fernandez and Luis Guzman.  G Ryan Brooks brings experience and the ability to hit key shots.  F Lavoy Allen simply snatches every rebound in sight.

(Lavoy Allen)

Richmond is a team on fire.  They have won 10 of their last 11 games.  The only loss was that thrilling 2 ot loss to Xavier on the road.  Richmond ultimately gets the job done forcing turnovers with their defense.

The Spiders have a formidable duo in the backcourt in Kevin Anderson and David Gonzalvez.  Anderson is more of the slasher, while Gonzalvez can hit from anywhere on the court.  F Justin Harper is long and athletic in the frontcourt.

(Kevin Anderson)

Prediction- Temple, the Owls will fly their way towards a 3rd consecutive A10 Title.

Projected NCAA Tournament Seeds

  • Temple (4)
  • Xavier (7)
  • Richmond (7)
