ACC TOURNAMENT PREVIEW

Locks

  • Duke
  • Maryland
  • Florida State
  • Wake Forest
  • Clemson

Bubble

  • Virginia Tech- Avoid a bad loss, although they should be in
  • Georgia Tech- Beat UNC in 1st round.

3 Players to Watch

  1. Malcolm Delaney (Virginia Tech)- ACC’s leading scorer at 20.9 ppg; he’s a good shooter.
  2. Jon Scheyer (Duke)/Greivis Vasquez (Maryland)- Time for each to prove themselves and find out who is the best player in the ACC.
  3. Trevor Booker (Clemson)- He may be an undersized power forward, but he is incredibly athletic.  He attacks the rim with authority and emphasis.  He can also step back behind the line and knock it down.

Sleeper

  • Georgia Tech- This team was up and down in ACC play going just 7-9 in conference, but they have talent.  Derrick Favors and Gani Lawal are solid low-post scorers.

Projected Championship Game- 1. Duke (27-5) (13-3) vs 2. Maryland (23-7) (13-3)

This would be the match-up all ACC fans would want to see.  Duke has been king when it comes to conference tournament time, and Maryland may be the hottest team in the country.  Plus, you have the individual match-up between Scheyer and Vasquez.

Every year Duke continues to be atop the ACC Standings.  Coach K has continually stated that he’s very proud of this particular squad because they’ve been very succesful despite not being the most athletic of teams.

Duke loves to fire up 3’s.  The trio of Jon Scheyer, Nolan Smith and Kyle Singler have knocked down triples all season long.  They also defend the 3 very well as they hold their opponents to 27% from beyond the arc.

(Jon Scheyer)

Maryland had a virtuoso start to the regular season.  In the Maui Invitational, the Terps dropped two to both Cincinnati and Wisconsin.  They also had a undescribable loss to William & Mary on their home floor.  Then the Terps got into ACC play and took off where they went 13-3 and have a 7 game winning streak.

Greivis Vasquez has had an exceptional senior season at Maryland.  Vasquez has a great passion for the game.  He simply controls the game when his emotions are on a high level.  He can attack the rim and has a sweet stroke from three.  He also exemplifies some nice court vision as well.

(Greivis Vasquez)

Besides Vasquez, G Eric Hayes is a hard worker and a solid 3 point shooter and F Landon Milbourne is a pogo stick.

Prediction- Duke, it should be a great game, but Duke owns the ACC.
