NCAA Tournament Recap- Thursday Evening Part 1

Is the Big East overrated?  We’ve now seen 3 Big East teams go down, and Villanova played horribly.

14.Ohio over 3. Georgetown (97-83)

  • Georgetown has had as many ups and downs this year as Tiger Woods.  There’s been good Geogetown with their showing in the Big East Tournament, and the win over Duke.  Then there’s bad Georgetown, losing to Rutgers, Old Dominion and now 14th seeded Ohio.  The image of shock on the Georgetown bench after the game tells the complete story.  There was abolute dejection.  I was just waiting for a comeback, and it never came.
  • Ohio was the better team, and Armon Bassett was the main reason why.  He had 32 points.
  • This has been a remarkable turnaround for Ohio.  They were 7-9 in the freakin’ MAC.  Where did this turnaround come from?  It must have been the NCAA Tournament gods and the magic of March.
  • With the win, Ohio chalks up their first tournament win in 27 years.
  • Game Rating- 2 1/2*

11. Washington over 6. Marquette (80-78)

  • The upsets keep coming, and the Big East keeps losing.  This time it’s Marquette.  The Golden Eagles won all the close games late in the season, but they couldn’t get it tonight.  Quincy Pondexter hit the winner with 1.7 left.
  • In a game of runs, it was Washington storming back from a 15 point deficit in the 2nd half to pull out a win.
  • The Big East is 1-3 to start the tournament.
  • Game Rating- 3 1/4*

9. Northern Iowa over 8. UNLV (69-66)

  • Northern Iowa’s Ali Faroukmanesh has some serious range.  From about 25 feet, Mr. Faroukmanesh hit nothing but bottom from about 25 feet with 5 seconds left to give the Panthers the win.
  • Faroukmanesh had 17 points, hitting 5 from deep.
  • Game Rating- 3 1/4*

1. Kentucky over 16. East Tennessee State (100-71)

  • East Tennessee State had a fine showing as a 16 seed last year.  This 1 seed had a bit more talent.
  • Game Rating- 1/4*
  1. No trackbacks yet.
