NCAA Tournament Recap- Thursday Evening Part 2

9. Wake Forest over 8. Texas (81-80 OT)

  • I guess when you have two disappointing teams during the regular season, you get a decent tournament game.  Ishmael Smith, arguably the fastest guard in the country pulled up and nailed a jumper with 1.3 left to give Wake the win.
  • In the overtime period, Texas was up by 8 points, and then Damion James fouled out.  It seemed to turn the game around in the overtime stanza.
  • Wake had lost 5 of 6 games entering the tournament.
  • Game Rating- 3 1/4*

6. Tennessee over 11. San Diego State (62-59)

  • Tennessee fans were disappointed with their seeding, but frankly Tennessee played quite well.  Next is 14th seeded Ohio, so maybe Tennessee gets a break, or maybe not. We shall see.
  • Melvin Goins hit a key 3 late to put the Volunteers “over the hump.”
  • J.P. Prince had 15
  • Game Rating- 3*

3. New Mexico over 14. Montana (62-57)

  • The Lobos were up for much of the 2nd half, but Montana just wouldn’t go away.  Brian Qvale kept the Grizzlies in the game scoring 26 a career-high 26 points.
  • Anthony Johnson, who netted 42 in the Big Sky Championship Game, had only 1 field goal.  It came with less than 2 minutes in the game.
  • Roman Martinez led all scorers for New Mexico.  He had 19.
  • Game Rating- 2 1/4*

 1. Kansas over 16. Lehigh (90-76)

  • It was close for a half, then Kansas put the foot on the pedal.  It was an extravagant effort from Lehigh.
  • Lehigh is a sleeper to look at the next couple of years with C.J. McCollum returning.  He’s only a freshman.
  • Game Rating 3/4*
