NCAA Tournament Recap- Saturday 2nd Round Part 3

9. Northern Iowa over 1. Kansas (69-67)

  • By far the biggest upset of the tournament, and in my opinion the biggest upset since George Mason knocked off Uconn to make the Final Four.
  • Northern Iowa just hung on at the end.  They committed turnover after turnover after turnover as the Jayhawks pressure defense clamped up on the Panthers.  Then, Ali Farokhmanesh said screw it.  Up by only a point with 35 seconds left, Farokhmanesh was wide open on the right-wing beyond the 3-point line.  Instead of holding the ball, drawing a foul, and go to the line, Farokhmanesh put it all on the line as the ball left his  fingertips.  All of the Northern Iowa faithful held their collective breath as the ball hung in the air for what seemed to be an eternity.  Then, jubilation as the ball split the strings.  Northern Iowa hit the knockout blow reminiscent of Buster Douglas.
  • Game Rating- 3 3/4*

3. Baylor over 11. Old Dominion (76-68)

  • Old Dominion rallied in the 2nd half, but Baylor hung on for the win.
  • Baylor lost a 14 point lead in the first half to allow the Monarchs back into the game.  The Bears used a 8-1 run to close to put the Monarchs away.
  • LaceDarius Dunn had 26 for Baylor.  Baylor C Josh Lomers had a career-high 14, 12 in the 2nd half.
  • Game Rating- 2*

11. Washington over 3. New Mexico (82-64)

  • Washington is utilizing their talent at the correct time.  The Huskies continue to win as they pound New Mexico.
  • Washington’s speed just ran past the Lobos.  Quincy Pondexter had 18, and Matthew Bryan-Amaning had 15 points and 9 rebounds.
  • Game Rating- 3/4*
