YOOOAdrian’s 2010 World Cup Recap- 7/10 Day 30

3rd Place Game

  • Sometimes the 3rd place games are more exciting than the actual final.  In these encounters, we get free-flowing end-to-end futbol.  The reason is simple, both teams have nothing to lose.  They’ve already been eliminated, so why not put on a show.
  • This game was no different.  In the pouring rain, both teams played attacking futbol.  If any team had something to prove, it was Uruguay.  They wanted to establish that they could compete with the big boys.
  • Thomas Muller of Germany and Diego Forlan for Uruguay both scored a goal.  There’s now a 4 way tie for the Golden Boot.  David Villa of Spain and Wesley Sneijder of Holland each have 5 goals as well.
  • I was surprised to see Miroslav Klose on the pine.  I know he was a bit hurt, but it would’ve been neat to see if he could’ve tied Ronaldo for the all-time World Cup goal mark.
  • Sami Khedira’s goal in the 82nd minute won it for Germany.  Diego Forlan nearly tied it on the last boot of the game.  On a free-kick from just outside the box, Forlan clanked it off the bar.
  • This is the 2nd consecutive World Cup in which Germany has finished 3rd.
  • Quick Facts- Out of the eight all-time World Cup 3rd place games, only 2 have finished with less than 4 total goals.
  • Men of the Match
  • Germany- Thomas Muller
  • Uruguay- Diego Forlan
